The Role of TierPoint Solutions Engineers

Senior Vice President of Solutions Engineering Rob Carter has a clear vision of his team’s mission: to establish TierPoint as an extension of each customer’s IT team, ensuring they view us as trusted advisors who can help align their business needs through technology solutions.

Solutions Engineers (SE) work closely with many other internal teams, especially Sales, Engineering, Service Delivery, Product, and Security to design sophisticated custom IT solutions that address each client’s unique challenges and budget.

“Clients need to get a good feel for our understanding of current and upcoming technology trends that will help grow their businesses, or they’ll look elsewhere,” said Carter.  “We embrace this role and are constantly challenging ourselves and internal teams to leverage our wide range of enterprise-grade solutions.  Our high-touch, personalized approach, beginning with our initial assessment and throughout the lifetime of the client engagement, is front and center to everything we do .”

Who They Are

Having come from a variety of disciplines, SE team members bring together a diverse set of skills and experience. Among them are, for example, a former security analyst, database administrator, storage architect, and VP of technology. Having a unique blend of subject matter experts working together is an asset to colleagues, customers, and prospective customers. Their combined teams are comprised of about 30 solutions engineers and other employees spread across the country, primarily in data center locations.

Recently introduced as a subset to the SE organization is TierPoint’s Professional Services group, led by team member Matt Brickey.

“Matt was initially brought on to manage customer migrations,” said Carter. “But we’ve since seen immediate interest in assessments and other traditional professional services.  Matt has already formed a strong group of partners and hired two team members to manage both migrations and professional services engagements.”

What’s On Their Radar

The team has been busy lately creating internal Process Improvement groups to tackle standardization; cross-functional collaboration; and focusing on several big cloud and DRaaS initiatives.

Other 2017 priorities include further sharpening team members’ expertise around Hybrid IT solutions specifically around Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS), and consulting with clients on cost-effective infrastructure design options.

“We’ll be leveraging public, multi-tenant, private and hybrid cloud models to design highly available solutions with a keen focus on security, agility and performance,” said John Stoker.
